Promoting Access to effective malaria treatment through PPMVs

In 2006, knowledge and awareness of Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) use among health Providers was very low. In a study conducted by SFH in Lagos and Abia ststes, only 37.5% of patent and proprietary  Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) surveyed had had heard of ACT.SFH organized a series of capacity building  sessions for selected PPMVs and, through their services, make ACTs available in urban and rural locations across Nigeria. A study conducted in 2010 shows that more PPMVs (81.8%) know that ACTs are the first line treatment for malaria. this marked improvement among the PPMVs was further shown when respondents were asked for the most effective treatment for malaria and 82.6% of them mentioned ACTs. Across the health service outlets, 81.8% of PPMV respondents mentioned Artemether  Lumefantrine  as the first line drugs according to the national guidelines.
